The Essence of Autumn

Sep 4, 2015 in Blog |

For many of us, the advent of autumn signals a stepped-up pace with more juggling of our multi-layered responsibilities. It can be both stimulating and overwhelming. This is the beginning of a season when I hear more people talk about not having enough time, of getting scattered and pulled in too many directions. Today I am passing along a gentle reminder to raise the bar to a higher level of consciousness on how you are taking care of yourself. Remember your capacity to be your own compassionate observer, with a constant internal whisper of “What do I need?” Then be honest with yourself. And do remember the Standing Stones Essence©. I am seeing and hearing stories of the incredible calm it brings, even in the midst of incredibly stressful times. And, remarkably, it leads us to a place of connection to infinite creativity where new solutions to life’s challenges are always accessible. altogether, it is quite transformative. I would love to hear your...

Tapping the Spirit of the Place

Tapping the Spirit of the Place

May 5, 2015 in Blog |

First, I invite you to take a moment to enjoy my video “Springtime in the Smokies.” It is in Celtic spirituality that I find the language that speaks so movingly to the sacredness of the earth, and our own ability to awaken to it and live a life transformed. As Frank MacEowen writes in The Mist-Filled Path, “Be it the healing energy of a tree, a time of silence at the river’s edge, or a moment of prayer at the hearth, the heart of the Celtic spirit is about blending with direct experience.” With this awareness tucked firmly in my heart, I recently headed out to the Great Smokey Mountains with my camera to experience the exuberant presence of early Spring. I felt privileged to witness delicate blossoms which are visible for only two to three days a year before they disappear again. I especially loved the rock-strewn rivers  which transformed at times into lacy cascades of waterfalls. Overhead, the movement of the clouds and mists added a mystical note by hiding and then revealing the ancient mountains. Tapping into the spirit of the place, I felt it to be simultaneously deeply peaceful and vibrantly alive. And sure enough, these gifts of the land were also consistently reflected in the warmth and openness of the people who lived there. One evening I stopped in a local barbecue place, homey, cozy and perched so close to the river you could watch it flow by from your table. When I discovered a couple of food allergies meant I couldn’t eat anything that had been barbecued, I was of course disappointed as I turned to the salad menu. But I was immensely touched when the owner came over to my table and said that he was so sorry there was nothing he could serve me “that had been cooked by my own hands.” Suddenly my heart was much lighter. I know now that we seek out such places in the land to experience more of our own wholeness. To remind us of our essential oneness with the living earth. I wish you great joy in your travels which deeply nourish you at all levels of your being.  ...

Stones and Personal Healing

Stones and Personal Healing

I’m convinced that the generous and gracious universe has left us tools for transformation literally at our fingertips. That in certain places there are easily accessible stones that hold an embodied consciousness. In my experience it is not just the amazing standing stones that so intrigue us, but, more simply, it is the rocks on the beaches and trails, in gardens and valleys that attract us. We carry them in our pockets and have them on our bedside tables. I now know that certain ones hold not only our memories of special places, but also an enduring energy imprint and access to specific states of consciousness that are personally transformative. Several years ago when I was traveling in Nova Scotia, I made a special trip to a place I had noticed on the map called Blue Rocks Beach thinking I might find some unique healing stones there. Once there I took in the ramshackle fishermen’s homes overlooking the stony beach, and then set about selecting several stones. Back home, I noticed that clients who were dealing with bouts of anxiety spontaneously reached out and held one particular blue stone, saying they always felt much calmer as they held it. One person who was to undergo surgery for ovarian cancer took it right into surgery with her! (It must have been a first for the surgeon.) Curious about the healing potential, I decided one evening to take it to a class I was teaching for high school students on overcoming test anxiety. One young woman in particular suffered greatly from anxiety that destroyed her test scores. With no fanfare or explanation I simply said to her, “Hold this.” Instantly, her expression changed, her eyes grew wide, and she said, “Wow, I feel calm! Is it the rock?” She then questioned me very closely: Where did I get it? Did I go there just to find it? Did I know it would make people calm? Having violated my own decision never to mix my work as a healer with that of my secular work in the schools, I grew increasingly uncomfortable. After all, parents were paying for their students to learn to study, not to experiment with rocks. So I laughed and...

Realizing We Are All Connected

Realizing We Are All Connected

Mar 3, 2015 in Blog |

As a healer, I see many people who feel estranged from the life they wish for. They are deeply lonely and discontented. They suffer from the disempowering belief that there is some mysterious and unknown thing they must do to feel like they belong. Sometimes however, we have rather astonishing personal experiences that we actually are already connected to life and everyone around us. Here is one of my recent stories. In New Mexico for a photography conference, I visited Ghost Ranch, home of the celebrated artist Georgia O’Keeffe. On a photographers’ tour, we had access to a private road that led into the fragile High Desert terrain, bordered by astonishing red rock cliffs that were transformed by shifting light. I quickly fell in love with the place. We were accompanied by staff members who insured we would not set so much as a foot off of the road in this invaluable ecosystem. Captivated by the towering rocks, the magnificent clouds, and the flowering cactus, I asked how I might visit again. I quickly understood that this area was off limits to individuals unless they were part of an official Ghost Ranch event, or an approved tour. Nonetheless, feeling such a strong connection to that beautiful place, a few days later I decided to go back on my own to photograph the surrounding public area. It was calling my name. In the midst of my two and a half hour drive, it was time for a pit stop. Uncharacteristically, I stopped in a McDonalds, a place I had not been in for years. Over a cup of coffee, I realized I was unsure how to get back to the highway and I looked around for someone to ask. Then it got interesting. Asked if he could tell me how to get on the highway, the gentleman responded, “Sure. Where are you heading?” “Ghost Ranch,” I replied. With a great beaming smile, he said, “I know exactly how to get there. I live there!” I couldn’t imagine anyone lived there, in that seemingly isolated spot. “Sure, my wife is the Executive Director of the conference center! ” It got better. Identifying himself as Jim, he asked where I was from,...

Revealing the World as Sacred

Revealing the World as Sacred

Feb 13, 2015 in Blog |

Having my own life-changing experience with the spirits on one of the Western islands of Scotland, I have been hungry to discover the stories of others who have reported similar encounters over time. Since ancient times, Celtic spirituality has related to the world as a sacred place with every aspect of nature filled with sacred consciousness. As the author Frank MacEowen notes, “…the Celtic spirit is pure soul and pure mysticism. Be it the healing energy of a tree, a time of silence at a river’s edge, or a moment of prayer at the hearth, the heart of the Celtic spirit is about blending with direct experience.” As a healer, one of my life’s quests is to seek out new ways to provide access to greater healing in all of its dimensions. Having worked with healing stones and plant essences in my practice, I envisioned working with the spirit of the Callanish stones to co-create an essence that could be made widely available. Few people have the opportunity to visit this place of mystery on a remote island. I found the idea of an essence that could provide healing for people at the level of consciousness, opening up new possibilities for those who seek it wherever they live in the world was irresistible. The world is hungry for experiencing wholeness, moving beyond this era of destructive divisions we see at work in the world. The Callanish Stone Essence® is the result of this vision. I invite you to experience it to help ground it in the world and to open up new vistas in your own...

We Are One

We Are One

Jan 12, 2015 in Blog |

It seemed that for at least one day, the world of spirit and the world of humanity had come together in the extraordinary Paris march. Out of a background of acts of extremism, hatred and unthinkable violence there suddenly arose a ringing response affirming unity, equality and brotherhood. Over a million people in Paris alone made a personal choice to step forward and be a visible presence embracing the values of the Other in society. Replacing the words of unchallenged deep divisiveness and conflict that we have grown accustomed to hearing were affirmations that we are all fundamentally one people. Many observers noted that day that something had fundamentally shifted. In the eternal world of the creative spirit, by way of contrast, many people have experienced the presence of unending peace, unbridled creativity, and the astonishing power of a collective community. I was gifted with the experience of connecting with all of this held in a particular place on the planet, at the hilltop of the Standing Stones of Callanish. Meditating to strengthen my relationship to this source of spiritual power and inspiration, I longed to know how we as humans could discover the availability of this consciousness that could fundamentally transform our life on earth. It seemed a stretch. That has been the question for people of spirit over eons of time. And yet, for a day, there was a world of new possibilities visible to the world....
